Rushik Patel is a performer and student specializing in a wide range of percussive traditions. From European orchestral styles and American rudimental drumming to West African djembe traditions and North Indian Hindustani percussion, Rushik has studied, performed, and taught an eclectic mix of musical styles under the percussion umbrella. Most notably, Rushik has performed with the internationally known group Djembe Yaru, bringing West African traditions to the forefront through interactive and engaging drum and dance styles. With Djembe Yaru, Rushik has performed at various Juneteenth celebrations, summer festivals, and formal concerts including the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra’s 2019 presentation of Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals.” Privately, he has presented a range of performances at Kalamazoo College Department of Music events, Western Michigan University Department of Music programs, private weddings and celebrations, and solo recitals. Rushik has studied with renowned musicians and artists including Mr. Nathaniel Waller, Ms. Carolyn Koebel, Mr. Ryan Jonker, Mr. Mark Guthrie, Mr. William Alderman, Mr. Landon Ewers, and Mr. Colin Bieszard. He is currently completing his Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance degree at Kalamazoo College.
